Age Charts & Participation Levels

Minnesota Hockey age classifications start on June 1 of birth year.

YOUTH CLASSIFICATIONS

Male and Female players are are allowed to participate and/ or tryout for all Youth teams. Only female players are allowed to participate and/ or tryout for Girls and Women's teams.

Play up placement is decided at the association level.

Peer up placement (Birth months of June, July, or August) shall be allowed by association policy unless affected by another MH rule.

Each association decides what divisions they will offer based on their individual policies and may not offer all divisions available.

YOUTH: 2025-26 Age Charts & Participation Levels

Youth 6U / Mini-Mite: Born on or after June 1, 2018

Youth 8U / Mite: Born on or after June 1, 2016

  • Typically broken down into levels 1, 2, 3, or 4 with 4 being the more experienced skaters.


Youth 10U / Squirt: June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2016

  • Division: A, B(1), B2, and C
  • Eligible for District 8 End of Season Tournament.


Youth 12U / Peewee: June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2014

  • Divisions, AA, A, B1, B2, and C
  • AA, A, and B1 divisions may qualify for State and Regional tournaments.
  • Divisions B2 and C will be eligible for District 8 End of Season Tournament.


Youth 14U / Bantam: June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2012

  • Divisions: AA, A, B1, B2, and C
  • AA, A, and B1 divisions may qualify for State and Regional tournaments.
  • Divisions B2 and C will be eligible for District 8 End of Season Tournament.

girls classifications

8 & Under Girls: Born on or after June 1, 2016

10 & Under Girls: June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2016

  • Division: A, B1, and B2
  • Eligible for District 8 End of Season Tournament.


12 & Under: June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2014

  • Divisions: A, B1, and B2
  • A and B1 divisions may qualify for State and Regional tournaments.
  • Division B2 will be eligible for the District 8 End of Season Tournament.


15 & Under: June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2012

  • Divisions: A and B
  • Both divisions may qualify for State and Regional tournaments.


19 & Under: January 1, 2006 to May 31, 2009

JUNIOR GOLD

Junior Gold teams are offered as an alternative to playing High School hockey. These teams are overseen by the Junior Gold High School Hockey League (JGHSL)

Junior Gold 16: June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2009

  • Teams in district may change annually based on total number of JG 16 teams in any given year.
  • JG 16 teams may qualify for Minnesota Hockey Regional and State Tournaments.


Junior Gold: June 1, 2005 to May 31, 2007

  • Divisions: A and B
  • Teams in district may change annually based on total number of JG teams in any given year.
  • Junior Gold A and B teams may qualify for Minnesota Hockey Regional and State Tournaments.
